Connie Spears has spent a lifetime fighting to improve education in Alabama.
My vision is to create an innovative and resilient educational system in Alabama that prepares all our students for the challenges of the future. I aim to work with my fellow board members and our state superintendent of education to cultivate an environment where every student has the resources and support needed to thrive. Through collaboration with educators, parents, community members and our legislature, we can drive meaningful change in our schools.
Our students’ education should not be dependent on their zip code. It is well past the time that every student should have access to the educational resources they need to excel at not just at the state or national level, but at the global level. I pledge to work hard to ensure that every student gets these resources.
Education professionals are the backbone of our school systems, and their expertise must be respected and valued. I am committed to advocating for educators’ voices in discussions about educational policy and reform. It is essential to listen to teachers, administrators, and support staff who understand the needs of our students firsthand. I will listen to and work with educators to share their insights and experiences, ensuring that decisions made at the state level are informed by their expertise and the best interest of our students.
Parental involvement isn't just helpful—it's essential. It builds a strong foundation for a child’s success in school and in life. When parents actively participate in their child’s education, whether by attending school events, helping with homework, or communicating with teachers, children are more likely to perform better academically and develop positive attitudes toward learning. This support not only boosts grades but also builds confidence, discipline, and motivation. Ultimately, when parents and schools work together, children thrive both inside and outside the classroom. I will always stand with our parents.
There are diverse opinions about involvement in education, so it’s essential to find an approach in line with Alabama’s values. We must advocate for policies which respect state and local control while ensuring that federal resources are used effectively to support our schools. I believe in working collaboratively with federal and state agencies to address the unique needs of Alabama’s students and educators. Also, by building and growing relationships with our lawmakers and encouraging frequent free-flowing communication between the state board, state superintendent and our legislators, we can build a collaborative force to work more effectively for our schools. I believe in a collaborative approach which respects the autonomy of local education authorities while ensuring accountability.
Public libraries are vital community resources that foster literacy, provide access to information, and support lifelong learning. It is crucial to create safe spaces for all ideas and ensure that our libraries can serve as gateways to knowledge and creativity, consistent with our first amendment rights to free expression. It is also important that our children are protected from materials that their parents may deem inappropriate. As a board member, I will champion the importance of libraries in our communities and education system, advocating for policies that protect their funding and autonomy, as well as being a safe space for learning.
My campaign for the Alabama State Board of Education District 8 is built on the principles of respect, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence in education. Together we can create a brighter future for all our students by advocating for policies that support educators, protect our libraries, and ensure that every child has access to high-quality education. Join me in this important journey to elevate education in Alabama.
We are running a grassroots campaign, and every contribution will go to getting our message out.
